Learn More About Our Legacy of Service In This Short Video
Harambee (Har-ahm-bay)” is our name and our mission, which means “Let’s Pull Together” in Swahili. We pull people together for the good of community by connecting the people of the Pacific Northwest with the people and diverse cultures of Africa. We believe that intercultural awareness, education and exchange are essential to building genuine understanding, respect and enduring relationships anywhere in the world.”
Harambee was founded in 2001 by longtime Portland residents Grace Kuto (who was born and raised in Kenya) and Jackie Goldrick (who worked in Ghana and Kenya for several years). Their vision was to help increase knowledge about and appreciation for African cultures and traditions by supporting multicultural education programs and cross-cultural exchanges.
