Angola is a former Portuguese colony which gained independence in 1975. A devastating civil war ensued until 1990. Most citizens of Portuguese descent fled, and what had been a thriving economy deteriorated into bankruptcy. A new constitution was adopted in 2010, but recovery from the long civil war is just beginning. Currently Angola is an impoverished country with major issues of infrastructure, health and lack of education.
