Benin is a former French colony which was previously known as Dahomey. Following its independence in 1960, it followed a democratic course for 12 years. It then became the People’s Republic of Benin, a Marxist-oriented state, from 1972-1990. Following the collapse of the banking system, a new constitution was adopted and the country became the Republic of Benin. It now functions as a democracy with a multi-party system, and the economy has been growing gradually, based largely on agriculture.
