Day of the African Child & Event Registration

Today, June 16th, is the International Day of the African Child. In the past and for several years, Harambee Centre observed and celebrated this day to commemorates the Soweto Uprising of June 16, 1976, when thousands of black school children in South Africa protested against the poor quality of education and the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction.

The protests were met with violent repression, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of children. Since 1991, the day has been observed annually across Africa to honor these children and raise awareness about ongoing challenges in education and child welfare.

Join us on Sunday, October 18th at 2:30pm in Tigard, Oregon to celebrate Harambee Centre’s 25th Anniversary!
