Science Laboratory

Background

The science laboratory project at St. Andrew’s Matale Secondary School began in response to a critical need for practical science education in rural Uganda. Before 2008, students at St. Andrew’s had minimal access to lab facilities, making it difficult to fully understand and engage with subjects like chemistry and physics. Without hands-on experience, they faced significant challenges in competing on national exams, which require practical knowledge and skills not easily gained through theory alone.

This lack of resources limited their future opportunities, as a strong foundation in science is essential for careers in medicine, engineering, and teaching—fields that are particularly needed to support local development. Recognizing this, the Harambee Centre and local leaders saw the lab as a crucial step in leveling the playing field for students at St. Andrew's, providing them with the tools to explore scientific concepts and develop essential skills.

With support from GlobalGiving donors and the Nike Foundation, the lab project was initiated to bridge this gap, transforming science education from textbook-only learning to interactive, practical experience. The lab was designed to create an environment where students could perform experiments, work with actual scientific equipment, and prepare effectively for both academic and real-world challenges in STEM fields.

LASTING IMPACT

Since its completion in 2008, the science laboratory has transformed science education for over 500 students, many of whom have gone on to careers in medicine, engineering, and education. This dedicated space for hands-on learning has elevated students’ practical skills, confidence, and readiness for national exams, setting a new standard for science education at the school.

Alumni now working in STEM fields often credit the lab with sparking their initial passion and equipping them with a foundation in science that has propelled them forward. The opportunity to engage directly with science equipment has made advanced studies in physics, chemistry, and biology more accessible and inspiring.

The lab continues cultivating a generation of students eager to enter impactful professions, creating a legacy of achievement and progress in healthcare, and education that radiates through the community.
